Sweers Island

Sweers Island has miles of golden beaches, blue waters, a wealth of history, and a huge variety of bird life. Although it is a fisherman's paradise, it offers enjoyment for the whole family. Sweers is located in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria approximately 30 kms off the coast, directly north of Burketown. The island is surrounded by acres of rock reef, with some coral, much of which has never seen a fishing line. You can fly fish off the beach or troll from the boat. Sweers Island is approx. 7 kms long and is virtually surrounded by rock reef. Some of these reefs become partially exposed at low tide. This, combined with the many rocky headlands on Sweers make it a lure and fly fishing paradise. Whether fishing for the first time or seasoned anglers the surrounding waters cater for all. Most species of reef fish including coral trout and parrot fish are caught here. In season the pelagic fishing is superb with species such as Spanish Mackerel, Grey Mackerel, Giant Trevally, Giant Leatherskin, Queenfish, Northern Blue Fin Tuna, and Cobia being caught. Barramundi are always a possibility off the beach and sharks are prolific year round. The boats provided are 4.6 meter Borger Alloy NQ Cats, powered by 40 hp Yamaha outboards and conform to the D.O.T survey standards. They are equipped with rod holders and live bait tanks. Eskies and water bottles are also provided. Your catch can be cooked in the resort kitchen or frozen to transport home.

The average daily maximum temperature ranges from 35 degrees C in December to 24 degrees C in June and July. The most pleasant times to visit the Gulf Country are from late March until mid October. During this time, south-east winds prevail and can sometimes blow up to 25 knots in the morning and drop off to dead calm in the afternoon. These winds can be chilly at night so from May to September it is advisable to bring at least a warm jacket and jeans for evenings. You will travel in safety, comfort and style aboard our Cessna 404 Titan as your pilot takes you on a fantastic journey across our vast land.
